According to OSHA* over 4,500 workers on the job have been killed each year for the past several years. That works out to more than 12 people per day, who went to work but did not have the opportunity to return to their families at the end of their shift. They left widows, widowers, orphans and grieving fathers and mothers. In a recent year twenty percent of fatal work accidents involved construction workers, making it one of the most deadly careers in the nation behind transportation and material moving. Workers who were caught between objects, electrocuted, fell or were struck by objects accounted for over 50% of the deaths, with falls making up the vast majority of these. OSHA states that eliminating just these four problems would have saved 478 lives in 2013.

OSHA inspects construction sites and other work places across the country on a regular basis and issues citations. The majority of the citations in 2013 were for failure to provide adequate fall protection on construction sites. Other top ten items cited included improper respiratory protection, electrical hazards and improper or non-existent machinery/machine guards.

Work injury and illness is not just a big-city problem. OSHA reports that there have been about 400 reports of worker illness and injury in Dothan, Alabama, 104 in Enterprise, 24 in Geneva, 60 in Ozark and 55 in Abbeville in recent years. That makes over 600 families who have experienced suffering in our Wiregrass area of southern Alabama.

Many workers who are injured or become ill due to workplace conditions are employed by large corporations with the ability to afford "big-time" attorneys to fight claims brought against them. All the while, the worker is left trying to figure out how to pay bills. The personal injury attorneys at Cherry & Irwin want to help you. Not only do we take most cases on a no win-no fee contingency basis, our lawyers are experienced in worker's compensation cases, especially those involving construction and industrial accidents. Sam Cherry, one of our founding partners, has successfully litigated industrial death and injury cases that have resulted in numerous industry-wide changes that are making work safer for thousands of people around the world. Cherry & Irwin can help you level the playing field!

One of the other areas of work related injuries that may be one of the most serious are respiratory problems. Respiratory problems may not start showing signs and symptoms until years after the substance was inhaled. Mesothelioma is an example. This disease causes the person to become sick several years after exposure. Some lung cancers can be contributed to work environments. If you feel that you may have been exposed to a hazardous substance while at work, take a minute to fill out the form requesting a free consultation with the personal injury attorneys, Cherry & Irwin, in Dothan, Alabama.
